My partner was trying out my Bosch Tarot today and he made this up for a reading. It worked really well for him so I told him to post it so others could see. I’ll test it sometime soon. ^^

I am in love with this spread. I’ve been very dissatisfied with my usual spreads lately for personal readings- it seems to only be giving me gibberish, or telling me 2 things at once. This gave me a clear, cohesive message tonight. Very pleased, will be using again.

Spirit Communication with Tarot pt 2

(Part 1)

The first post was an intro - this one will function as the core ‘how to’. I may have a third one with my shared experiences, I may not - we’ll see!

Okay, the first post was a bit about me and my experience, and just general information about things you want to be aware of before you start working with this. PLEASE read that post. The last bit that’s really important is this - you control everything with spirit.

Here’s another bit of info I need to address before we go further - A lot of people are scared about mediumship or ghosts because they fear being haunted, or ‘catching something bad’. Let’s see how many times I can say this without annoying you; you control Spirit. Spirits are all energy so they respond to vibration. Whatever your mental state is, that vibrational frequency is being sent out. As soon as you set that intention that you’re dipping into the spirit world, spirits will be drawn to your wavelength. So if you sit in your living room with the lights all out except a couple of candles and start shivering and stuttering as you announce your intention, if you keep glancing around and checking for spooks, you’re going to attract ‘nasties’. You can send them away by acknowledging that you are in control, and they cannot be in your presence. Being confident will help you tremendously. If you don’t feel you can be confident, find a friend who can be serious to support your first adventure.

So, let’s begin, shall we? This is perhaps when I will get some less-than-pleased mail about how simple the process is. Or how the lack of consistency in the process. More or less, I’m just going to explain how I started doing this, and how my ‘practice’ has evolved. It’s going to work differently for everyone so remember to experiment. Oh, and here’s a post about the three books I recommend to anyone who’s serious about studying mediumship.

I started off originally by decking my space out. I had crystals out, a neat cloth, incense, candles, and some bad ass new-agey music going. Nowadays I make sure the coffee table has been wiped down, light a candle and get some nature sounds on the stereo. Sometimes I light a stick of my favorite incense. I started with one deck but I have a couple I’m comfortable reading with, and my Old Reliable is the Legacy of the Divine. I started with a spread (with lots of redundant positions) to contact my spirit guide. SOME people I work with prefer to cast a circle, set up sacred space, etc - if you feel called to do that, by all means, please do. While I think spirit communication requires a few key components to success, it’s a highly personal experience and I would encourage you to experiment with what feels best to you.

Note: If you’re looking to get in contact with your spirit guide, and you’ve been trying to get in contact with them for a while, and you feel exasperated, like nothing works - please read my article here on my old blog. The long and short of it is that our spirit guides are talking to us, we just have to STOP TRYING SO HARD to fill the silence and just listen once in a while.

I don’t work with spreads anymore because I find them to be pretty limiting. So I say something, aloud, or silently, before or while I shuffle my cards, like “I want to get to know my spirit guide(s) better, so please feel free to manipulate these cards in any way to make your presence known”. I personally shuffle my cards in a meditative state, something about the rhythmic shuffling, bridging, and cutting just really puts me in my center. I take several deep breaths. We are going to be listening and watching and waiting - not controlling or domineering. I shuffle until I feel the cards are ready to stop, and then I cut the deck as usual and pick which pile I feel is the right one. The first time I tried this, I was very ‘in the zone’ and had the distinct sensation someone else was ever so slightly touching the cards as I shuffled.

Sometimes I find it’s easier to ask a question and phrase it so that you’re asking the spirit’s advice. So, ‘ok spirit guide, what do you think about this situation?’ and then lay out whatever cards in whatever spread you like. When you’re comfortable with the cards you’ve laid out, try to get back into your meditative/centered state. Focus on the cards. Take an overview of the cards and try to gauge the energy that surrounds them. I dunno about other readers but I can usually detect a lot about what’s going on in a situation by just glancing and evaluating the cards that appear. This is USUALLY where I can sort of ‘link in’ and establish preliminary contact with a specific spirit. How do I know when I’ve been ‘linked in’? It means I’m able to sense a presence there that is not my own.

This sense of ..sense, for lack of a better word, is something we ALL have. We have it when we’re little and we sense there’s a monster in the closet, we have it when we’re doing something and can tell we’re being watched… we all have it. If you can’t seem to pick it up right at the beginning of the spread, don’t fret, you probably just need some more practice. The first time I did this, I was about halfway through the spread. I can now do this almost instantaneously - just from lots of experimenting.

Interpret the cards as you would for any other spread. If you’re somewhat experienced with tarot you shouldn’t have a problem here. Keep trying to stay in that centered state, however, and if other things pop in your head, let them be there. Acknowledge them. You might want to write these things down or make notes of them - you will not remember them later. As you interpret the spread, you may have other concepts, thoughts or questions come into your mind. There’s no set way to deal with these. Acknowledge and move on, or ask another question.

Spirits talk in symbols so tarot is an EXCELLENT way to not only communicate with them, but to prepare yourself to communicate with them. For example, they can use a flag to represent military service or a national holiday, a dog to represent loyalty (or the fact that they had a dog), a blanket to represent comfort, and so on. If you feel like you’re having a hard time ‘picking up’ things off of your cards, that’s okay, too. You can always ask a question and shuffle your cards until something falls out or you feel compelled to cut the cards and lay them out. Pay attention to the symbology of the cards more than the actual memorized meaning, if this is applicable. For example, there’s usually a white dog in the Fool card - if your eyes are drawn to the dog, this might be much more significant than the actual card.

Spirits are all around us whether we believe it or not. They are always trying to communicate with us - the question is, are we willing to stop and listen to them? Tarot can help us tune in to their level and listen.

Thus, I think, this ends the mini-series? I feel a bit bad that this has so little system to it, but I really don’t use tarot for much mediumship anymore. Repeated practice with this helped me access spirits without the cards. Once and a while, when I am stumped, I lay the cards out and then pay very little attention to them. For some reason they function as a focus more than a true divination session.

So, I call this spread The Hand You’re Dealt and it’s..pretty open ended. I like spreads that can be adapted to a lot of situations! But the main idea for this is when you have SEVERAL things that you need to read for, and you’d like to go in depth for each of them. A rather overwhelming prospect!

This particular spread was designed for a 78-79 card tarot deck. It uses every card. If you have a deck that has more or fewer cards, then I’m sure you could fiddle with the numbers to get the general idea of this spread to work.

So, because this spread is meant for versatility, you don’t get hard and fast meanings for the positions. Use them as you see fit! I’ll just give you a general overview of what I see as being possible so far. Feel free to tweak this as much as you like and use your imagination on it.

Cards 1-6: These are the overview cards. You can pick six areas of your life to look at (love, money, health, friendships, school, spiritual?), six people in your life (mother, father, brother, sister, best friend, love interest?)…even six choices, problems, or ideas.

As some of you may have seen, when testing this spread, I picked six “selves” — witch, pagan, author, artist, fortune teller, and then my public “persona”, if you will.

Personally, I look at each of these six cards as six people who are now about to get their own reading. I used these cards to give me an overview of these people — their situations, their destinies, their potential. In at least one case, the card in this position told how I felt about that part of my life.

Note that if you want to pick six totally unrelated things, you can do that as well! You don’t have to be themey in what you pick.

Piles: Now, each person gets dealt 12 cards. If you’re using a 78 card deck, you won’t have any left in your hand when you’re done.

The cards in the piles are also whatever you need them to be. You can read them chronologically. You can arrange them into a story. I personally looked at them as the options I had in each situation. I can choose to play the card or not, but it’s in my hand. You may see them as the energies at work in each area.

It’s fun to look at where the cards end up at. Where is The Tower going to end up? Ten of Swords? What are they going to mean there? If you have a significator, where did it go? Did all of your majors end up dumped in one spot? That kind of thing.

Optional Card: If you have a card left over, you can look at it as an overview of everything going on in each area, or maybe the Ace up your sleeve to help you in an area that you don’t like your cards for. Maybe it’s something you can apply to each situation.

If you can’t come up with six areas, you can use the basic idea of the spread and either adjust the number of cards in the piles, or just not read with the entire deck, of course. But I like the idea that you’ll see every card you have in the reading.

Also, I have to say, I’m really fond of the format of this spread — most 78 card spreads take up a lot of space, and it’s really hard to look at them as a coherent reading. By breaking it up like this, I feel like it helps to narrow the focus.

I’ve had a few people request a post on how I use pokémon cards, and here it is! Keep in mind that these are only the things I do or can think of, but the possibilities are potentially limitless.

Divination

This is the most obvious use to me. Making your own oracle deck feels really good — they can be any size, you can include whichever cards you like, and there are even sites where you can buy individual pokémon cards for a few cents each or make your own cards, if you must have something specific in your deck. My first pokémon oracle deck was 55 cards because it felt right at the time, but I’ve since modified it into a 78 card deck, and I’ve swapped out a few cards since then.

Here’s a link to the post I wrote about interpreting the cards on the first day I tried it. I’ve had more experience with it in the five or so months since then, but here’re the basic ways you can interpret the cards:

Personal associations with or memories of each pokémon.

Material from the games and TV shows — all at Bulbapedia.

The card’s illustration; colors, what’s happening, the “feel” of the card.

Pokémon typing, resistance and weakness, HP, attacks, pokémon powers, what stage of evolution it is, the card’s pokédex entry, instructions on Trainer cards, etc.

I use my deck just like a tarot or oracle deck, but you could also try playing a game against someone and making interpretations based on how the game goes. I’ve also had a few ideas about spreads based on the card game: one card to represent you or a strength of yours, then a row of five (your bench) below it to signify your allies or other strengths; you could repeat the same across from yourself to represent an enemy or opposing force. Add in six prize cards on the side for a really intricate spread.

I have a tag that I use for all my posts involving my Pokémon TCG Oracle, so you can look there to see some sample readings. Here are some quick links to a few posts I did interpreting specific cards, so you can get an idea of the level of depth the cards can have (1, 2).

Altars, Shrines, Displays, etc.

I use pokémon cards on my altars from time to time, and I’ve seen a few others who do too.

A few ideas:

Using cards as representations of elements, deities, spirits, archetypes, goals: for example, Energy cards or typed pokémon to represent your elements system (if you have one), Sawsbuck as a deer or antlered deity, Cubone to represent loneliness and strength, etc.

Seasonal altars or displays. You could use a color theme (such as red and yellow cards for an autumn holiday), or use pokémon that express what a season or holiday means to you (Kangaskhan, Exeggcute, Ducklett, and Oddish to represent spring renewal and new life; ghost pokemon for Halloween).

For magical purposes or for work with deities, spirits, or the pokémon themselves.

Purely aesthetic reasons. Hey, if you think they look good there, why not? I’m guilty of putting cards on my altar just because I feel like it.

I’ve uploaded a few pictures of pokémon cards on my altar, which I’ll link to in the next section because they were there for spellwork.

Spellwork

Again, there are tons of possibilities — you can use them however you would use tarot or oracle cards, and you could modify preexisting spells that call for them.

A few things I’ve done, and some I haven’t but have ideas about:

Arrange them as a focus for your thoughts or energy, like working towards a goal of yours. Example here.

Empower cards for specific purposes, and then carry them with you or place them around your house. Examples: Carry Meowth for luck and to draw money, choose pokémon as your home’s guardians and place those cards around your house or property, leave a Snorlax on a target’s property to block an area of their life.

Use cards as part of crystal grids or for other energy manipulation techniques. Trainer cards and Energy cards are useful here. Examples: (1), (2).

Incorporate cards into charms and spell jars. This could mean permanent use or destruction of a card, but if you’re okay with that then go ahead. Why not make a witch’s ladder or mobile with pokémon cards, or put them in a charm bag?

For closeted witches:

Pokémon cards could be a useful tool if your family or friends can’t find out about what you’re doing. If you already have an old deck or two, or still use your cards, it’ll just look like you’ve left some cards out or made art with them. If you use spreads that look like a pokémon battle, even if someone walks in on you divining with them you can write it off as planning battle strategy. If someone asks why you have several cards arranged on your bedside table (altar), well, you just like how the art looks and were decorating your room, of course! Same with a hanging mobile or collage made from the cards — you’re just being creative.

I've started practicing tarot for about 5 months ago, and I have done some readings on friends and they have been on point. However when I do readings on myself I'm not so confident I don't know if I am too biased or not biased enough. I guess what I am asking is how to be less skeptical of my personal readings.

Hi there, thanks for writing in! I’m Jessica (walk-your-talk) and someone recently asked me a similar question on my personal blog. Here’s a link to it, if you’d like to see how I respond. I feel it covers a few important things I would tell anyone who says they want to be better at readings.

It doesn’t address reading for yourself personally, though, so I’ll add my 2 cents worth here. I don’t feel very comfortable reading for myself. I do it a lot, sure, but I try to take what I pick up on with a grain of salt. I have had to force myself to write EVERYTHING down. Even if it seems wrong at the time when I think it, it ends up being somewhat relevant later on. But if I dismiss that thought and forget about it, I never get a chance to look back and say ‘wow, I wish I would have kept that silly thought because it ended up being exactly right’. I tend not to be as good at picking up details in my own life and there are some blatantly obvious things that I miss, like a couple of months ago I was showing a group of ladies I worked with locally how to do generic readings with a specialized deck (I was working with Doreen Virtue’s Life Purpose cards) and I pulled Nutrition for myself, and literally sat there and said “I don’t know what this means”. Someone else piped up right away and said ‘earlier today you mentioned you’ve been trying to eat healthier’ which was absolutely correct, I just felt myself drawing a blank.

So my advice to you would be to give yourself lots of time and practice when it comes to reading for yourself, and write as much down as you can. When you feel guided, check with other readers to see if they’d be willing to see if they can validate what you got for yourself. There’s usually lots of people online who are willing to do swaps, and many are also willing to give you an interpretation of the cards you pulled for yourself that adds another dimension of clarity.

This is how my reading space looks when I am getting down to work. Raw silk and purple velvet spread cloth, by Tarot by Sulis, two decks in case I need to pull more cards, which today are Legacy of the Divine by Ciro Marchetti and Llewellyn Tarot by Anna Marie Ferguson. I have my trusty pendulum, a beautiful rose quartz a dear friend gave me, and a few other crystals to aid my purpose.

I have a Wand, a Cup, a Sword, and some Coins for Pentacles. I have incense burning for protection and cleansing, and to carry my thoughts as high as possible. Lotus oil to open third eye chakras, a candle in my cross holder, and my dragon totems, who are protectors. They hold black salt, which absorbs negative energy, and pink salt, as I am doing a relationship reading. My own cup of Zen green tea, in my black unicorn mug, a gift of love, and the unicorn a symbol of wisdom, love, purity. Water also to drink.

I have Fire in my candle, Water in my chalice, Air made visible by the incense smoke, and Earth in the salt and crystals. Since I am doing a relationship reading, I have pulled the cards for the signs of each person from Astrology Reading Cards by Allison Chester Lambert and Richard Crookes to act as Significators.

A little meditation, a little focus of purpose, and I am ready to work!

(Oh yeah, in the background is my Nightmare Before Christmas Snuggie covering the wreck our entertainment center currently is. Games and movies strewn everywhere! I think the ps3 is gonna disappear until some respect is shown for these items…)

How do you like your reading space to look? Is there anything you NEED? I only need my deck, but the other things are nice and set the mood. I like to romance my cards!
